The Spice of Life Variety Show began in 1983 as a project of the Junior Women’s Club of Kankakee.  Under the direction of local performers Ron and Barb Guertin, the show premiered to benefit the club’s official charity, Harbor House.  Harbor House was founded by a group of local women who wanted to offer shelter and support to victims of domestic violence.  The first show was such a success, the club decided to continue it as an annual event and the Guertins continued not only directing the show, but also discovering local talent to perform each year.  With the help of their son, Bill, a live stage band became a standard feature in the show.  Bill and his wife Sherri became regular performers and their sons even joined the show doing skits and songs.  The family affair ended in 2003 when Bill and Sherri left to pursue their own business ventures.  Bonnie Brewer was added to help over see the music, and in 2005, took over as director of the show.  Now assisted by her daughter, Barbi and Business Director Karen Bayer, she continues the tradition of bringing outstanding local talent to the Spice of Life stage each summer.
